Finding Children's Literature

Finding fiction, poetry, and trade books for children

Searching the Catalog for Children's Literature

Almost all fiction and trade books targeted towards children are given a subject heading that includes the word "juvenile" in it. Therefore, if you are using the catalog to find children's books, including a subject search for juvenile along with your topic will bring up books appropriate for children.

Example search for children's books about counting: counting AND d:(juvenile)

The Catalogs

There are three catalogs you can search as a student at Heidelberg. The Beeghly (OPAL) Catalog searches for items in our library, the OhioLINK Catalog searches the collections of other college and university libraries in Ohio, and SearchOhio searches a number of public library collections. You are able to start a search in the Beeghly Catalog and then search OhioLINK and SearchOhio from inside that catalog if what you do want is not available.

Heidelberg students can also obtain a library card at the Tiffin-Seneca Public Library with proof of residence in Ohio. TSPL has a large children's book collection, and you can request books from many other Ohio public libraries as well. The librarians at TSPL are also a great resource for book recommendations.
