This guide is designed to help education students find children and teen's fiction and poetry, trade books, children and teen's magazine articles, K-12 scientific information, and more through the library. The guide will also help you identify high-quality children's books through reviews, awards, and recommendations.

Guide Organization

  1. Searching the Catalog: Where to search for children's book and how to do so more effectively.
  2. Finding Reviews: How to find professional book reviews through library sources as well as some free online resources. 
  3. Award Winners: Lists of major children's book awards. Most of those winners are available through Beeghly Library. 
  4. Recommended Lists: Collections of recommended books from a variety of sources, including diverse literature and trade books. 
  5. Databases for Children: Databases of magazines, encyclopedia articles, scientific information, and other resources for K-12 students, including some INFOhio databases.

Use these to improve your database and catalog searching.

  • Searches for results with all words
  • smoking AND cancer

OR

  • Searches for results with either search word
  • If combined with AND, words connected by OR need to be in parenthesis
  • Great for synonyms and related concepts: (smoking OR tobacco) AND cancer

Quotations

  • Combines multiple words into one search term
  • Great for names: "Martin Luther King"
